Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy in Suffolk County, NY

A colonoscopy allows your gastroenterologist to examine the lining of your large intestine (colon) for abnormalities by inserting a thin flexible tube, as thick as your finger, into your anus and slowly advancing the tube into your rectum and colon. This instrument is called a colonscope, and it has its own lens and light source that allows your gastroenterologist to view images on a video monitor.

Typically, a colonoscopy is recommended as a screening test for colorectal cancer, which is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Approximately 150,000 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in the United States and 50,000 people die from the disease. A colonoscopy might be recommended to evaluate for symptoms such as bleeding and chronic diarrhea.

To prepare for your colonoscopy, your gastroenterologist will inform you of what dietary restrictions are needed and what cleansing routine will be used. In general, the preparation consists of limiting your diet to clear liquids the day before and consuming either a large volume of a special cleansing solution or special oral laxatives. Your colon must be completely clean before the procedure is completed, so that results are accurate and comprehensive. Be sure to follow your gastroenterologist's instructions carefully.
