ASGE Quality Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program

The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), a leading gastrointestinal medical society, has recognized GREAT SOUTH BAY ENDOCOPY CENTER, as  part of its program specifically dedicated to promoting quality in endoscopy in all settings where it is practiced in the United States. Great South Bay Endoscopy Center  is one of only  450 endoscopy units to be granted the recognition since 2009. The ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program honors endoscopy units that have demonstrated a commitment to patient safety and quality in endoscopy as evidenced by meeting the program’s rigorous criteria, which includes following the ASGE guidelines on privileging, quality assurance, endoscope reprocessing, CDC infection control guidelines and ensuring endoscopy staff competency.

“We are honored to be recognized by ASGE for our efforts to enhance quality and safety in our endoscopy unit,” said Dr Ravi Singh, Medical Director of Great South Bay Endoscopy Center. “Through ongoing education and continued compliance with the ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program requirements, we demonstrate our dedication to the delivery of high-quality patient care.”

To be recognized by ASGE, a unit, through a peer-reviewed application process, must attest to the continued competence of all staff relative to their roles, demonstrate the adoption of unit policies specific to ongoing assessment of performance relative to key quality indicators, and attest that the unit has an established infrastructure and personnel dedicated to infection control and prevention. The program is applicable to all settings in the United States and Puerto Rico where endoscopy is practiced, including office-based endoscopy units, hospital-based endoscopy units, and stand-alone ambulatory endoscopy or surgery centers. An important component of the program is an educational course entitled, “Improving Quality and Safety in Your Endoscopy Unit,” which thoroughly reviews related guidelines. Upon completion of the program, the certificate is granted for a three-year renewable period. For a full list of program benefits, log on to www.asge.org.

“We are proud to acknowledge these endoscopy units through our Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program for their commitment to promoting the highest standards of safety and quality,” said Jonathan Cohen, MD, FASGE, chair, ASGE Quality Assurance in Endoscopy Committee. “By ensuring infection control principles are adhered to, continually assessing the competency of staff, and monitoring patient satisfaction, ASGE-recognized units contribute to the public’s confidence in endoscopy, a life-saving technology.”

Mission Statement

The primary objective of Brookhaven Gastroenterology Associates is to provide the highest quality of specialty care in gastroenterology, hepatology and gastrointestinal endoscopy for Long Island by creating an environment that encourages compassion, dedication and attention to the safety and individual needs of our patients.

About Us

For over 40 years, Brookhaven Gastroenterology Associates has been devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of digestive and liver diseases.  All our physicians are board certified in Gastroenterology and treat a variety of conditions from common diarrhea, gas problems, and  heartburn to diagnosing rare cancers of the gastrointestinal tract.

Gastroenterology is a specialty dedicated to evaluating the intestines (including the stomach, small and large intestines), liver, pancreas, and gallbladder.  With the aid of fiberoptic technology, extensive portions of the intestines can be examined and biopsied.  Colonoscopy or lower endoscopy has been an instrumental part of the public health initiative of screening for colon cancer.  Over the years we have also adopted the latest technologies including wireless capsule endoscopy, which takes thousands of pictures of the small intestine using a pill like camera, and  Endoscopic Ultrasound that helps better visualize and biopsy lesions throughout the body using special ultrasound guidance.

Great South Bay Endoscopy Center was approved by the New York State Department of Health in August 2014.  The 3,500 square foot center is a newly constructed, state-of-the-art facility , equipped with an industry leading CO2 insufflation system, which clinical studies have confirmed is associated with decreased post-procedural pain, flatus, and bowel distention.

At BGA, patients can be assured of our commitment to high quality, cost-effective health care in a respectful and compassionate environment.   Please schedule an appointment and find out why BGA is the right practice for you.
